Curriculum – Sixth Grade:

Reading

  • To do Drop Everything And Read daily
  • To demonstrate reading comprehension skills: inferring, drawing conclusions, critical thinking, etc.
  • To complete feature book, image book, journal and specific projects related to these themes

English

  • To know and apply rules of grammar: complete sentences, usage, punctuation, etc.
  • To write a paragraph that includes: a main idea with three or more details that support the main idea
  • To use the writing process: brainstorming, prewriting, composing, revising, editing, and publishing
  • To know and apply editing skills
  • To write friendly and business letters
  • To apply and use good speaking skills: enunciation, diction and projection

Spelling

  • To use and apply rules of phonics in attacking and writing of words
  • To copy words correctly from any other subject text
  • To use a dictionary/thesaurus to look up word(s)
  • To use correct spelling in daily work

Math

  • To know the place value
  • To use estimating skills: rounding to greatest, least, and front end
  • To know how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions and decimals
  • To identify and measure various geometric figures: angles, perimeter, and volume
  • To use and apply measurement: inches, feet, yards, meters, centimeters, kilometers, etc.
  • To know and apply basic concepts of algebra: ratio, percent, proportion, integers, etc.
  • To use problem solving strategies
  • To present, interpret and compare data using different kinds of graphs
  • To use a calculator to problem solve and check work

Social Studies

  • To know the history and culture of the various countries/regions throughout the world
  • To use and apply map skills
  • To apply study skills for completing research work: library, note-taking, outlining, references, etc.

Science

  • To study Life Science: Cells, Microbes and Heredity, the Fossil Record, Ecosystems, and Biomes
  • To study Physical Science: Matter, Compounds, Gravity and Forces of Energy
  • To study Earth Science: Earth’s Moving Plates, Resources, Conservation, and Oceanography
  • To know the scientific method and apply it when solving a science problem, or experiment
  • To read and interpret diagrams, bar graphs, and charts
  • To demonstrate safety during science experiments

Religion

  • To be reverent and respectful at all times during class and all school Eucharistic celebrations
  • To know the traditional prayers of our faith
  • To know the books of the Old Testament
  • To know that God reveals Himself to Israel and to us
  • To know that the Old Testament is the history of God’s people
  • To locate scriptural passages using the Bible
  • To participate in church, school, and community service projects
